Stoner Wood
A Reclaimed Landscape
Stoner Wood is a former quarry that has been successfully infilled, repurposed, and accepted.
Once defined by extraction, labour, and stone, it now offers woodland paths, open clearings, viewpoints, and moments of quiet significance.
What was taken has been replaced.
From Quarry to Woodland
Stoner Wood stands as a testament to generations whose labour shaped both the landscape and the town itself.
For over two centuries, limestone was extracted from this site. The quarry provided employment, identity, and material for buildings that still stand throughout Wokesworth and beyond.
Operations ceased in 1987. Infilling commenced in 1992. By 2008, the woodland had established itself sufficiently to permit public access.
Its current form reflects change, but not erasure.
A Shared Space
Quarry Descendants
For those whose families worked this land, Stoner Wood represents legacy. The paths follow former access routes. The viewpoints overlook what was once the working floor. Memory is embedded in the terrain.
Trust-Funded Hippies
For others, Stoner Wood provides expressive space. The clearings accommodate gatherings. The acoustics suit certain practices. The energy, they report, is excellent.
Both uses coexist.
The pond lifers are yet to make it this far up town.
